Arizona's Congressional District Three, represented by the retiring John Shadegg, has gained yet another Republican aspirant:
Former Vice President Dan Quayle, who lives in Paradise Valley, announced Friday during an interview on the Fox News Channel that his son, local lawyer Ben Quayle, will enter the Republican race to replace retiring Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., in the 3rd Congressional District.
"The big news is my son, Ben Quayle, today filed his papers for congressman in the 3rd Congressional District here in Arizona," Quayle said.
So, here's who is running for Shadegg's seat, on the Republican side alone:
- Former state Rep. Debra Brimhall
- Former state Rep. Sam Crump
- Former state Sen. Pamela Gorman
- Former Maricopa County special hospital district board member Paulina Morris
- Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker
- Former state Sen. Jim Waring
- Former Paradise Valley Mayor Ed Winkler
- ...and now Ben Quayle.
That's eight candidates; one more and they could field a baseball team. Regardless, they'll need bleachers for the debate.
I grew up in that district. If I moved back, how long before I established residency so I too could run. And my brother and sister both live there, so maybe they could throw their hats in the ring.
The good news? If every registered Republican declares his candidacy, it will only take two votes to win.
