Mister, we could use a man like Eleanor Roosevelt again

After leaving the White House, Mrs. Roosevelt received a stream of hate mail and threats, because she was America’s leading civil rights activist. So she continued to exercise her right to carry her handgun. In 1958, the F.B.I. warned her not to travel to a civil rights workshop at Highlander Folk School, in Tennessee; the Ku Klux Klan had threatened to kill her, and the F.B.I. was unable to protect her. The 74-year-old woman went anyway, and carried her revolver. The Klan left her alone, as it did almost every civil rights worker who was armed.

Quick question: If Pamela Gorman had been the Congressperson in question rather than Gabby Giffords, would the tragedy have happened? Would a maniac like this one target someone of her caliber?

Of course not. Maniacs prefer their targets unarmed and helpless, and "gun -control advocates" like the Brady Campaign and their ilk are all too willing to accommodate their wishes.

Re: You are your own first responder

"My point is, she wouldn't have to draw, because she's a hard target...."

We're pretty deep in the weeds now, so this is neither here nor there, but I think you're presuming that a madman would, when faced with a "hard target", act rationally and move on to a softer target.

I'd rather live in a fully gun-carrying society than in a fully gun-free one, because as you and I both know, there is no such thing as a gun-free zone, and only the law-abiding would dis-arm themselves. But carrying a gun is not a guarantee that no one would assault you; it just gives you a tool to use in the event that they do. If the world were only occupied with good-guys and "predators", then I'd agree with you. But there are also madmen who, by definition, aren't making rational decisions. Maybe a madman would attack even knowing a Congressman was armed, if only to prove the point that he could.

Somewhat off topic....
I'm sort of interested in the question of whether any politicians opt to have free-and-open meet-and-greets with their constituents while allowing either openly-carrying or concealed-carrying constituents to meet them. This morning, someone on the news was reporting that a couple of Congressmen were planning open meetings of exactly the sort that Giffords was used to holding. I imagine most would retreat to enclosed spaces where all attendees are screened before entry. But who would say: "I trust my public. Bring your weapon to my meeting"?

Best,
azlib

Re: You are your own first responder

True, if forced to draw, she'd lose. I'd lose, heck, anyone this side of Dave Sevigny would lose.

My point is, she wouldn't have to draw, because she's a hard target. She can shoot back if needed, something that weighs on the minds of predators as they chose their victims. Rather than risk his mission against a target that might shoot him first, he'd shift targets to someone else that he knows would be a unarmed victim of his mania.

Re: You are your own first responder

I take your point about "Brady and their ilk", but I don't know that "a maniac like this one [wouldn't] target someone of [Gorman's] caliber".

We each find ourselves in a number of crowded venues all the time....that Safeway grocery store is a perfect example. It isn't unusual for someone to ask you a question or somehow directly engage you while you're out. If that someone were to directly confront you--maybe its a loud voice or some animation along with the conversation--that would be out-of-the-ordinary, and if nothing else, your radar would immediately go up.

But Giffords was there for the purpose of meeting the public. I try to walk around every day in "Condition Yellow", and I suspect you do too. It would be nice to think that a Congressman would too, but I think that given the nature of that public out-reach venue, the average Congressman would lean towards Condition White. Armed or not, they're there to meet and engage with people.

You and I both know the distance at which an accurate pistol shot in a dynamic tactical situation can be made. For me, its about 25-30 yards, tops. That distance defines "my bubble" and the people who get inside that bubble get my attention. Giffords was inviting folks inside her bubble....in fact, she had them lined up in chairs awaiting their turn with her.

Congress (and state and local legislators) will obviously take their security more seriously now. Some of them will stop or limit their exposure to these meetings; some of them will move them into venues where their constituents are searched before entry; some of them will make sure some local cop is present; and some of them will carry themselves.

Maybe this is just me, but I think its a bit of a stretch to think that the average CCW holder, who has invited a number of strangers into his/her bubble, would be able to beat a "quick draw".
