The only way this country can go forward is if politicians are no longer part of the "1%". Politics should not be the gateway to instant wealth.

Re: The One (Percent)

If you think growing up in Hawaii as the pampered grandchild of well-off bankers (if you go to Punahou - you're a rich kid) is going to give him an emotional link to or appreciation of the USA, you need to go live in Hawaii for a while. If one of his parents had been in the military, then yes, he may have gone to the USS Arizona or the Diamondhead Memorial Park and grown up more "American." The culture in Hawaii is distinctly different from that on the mainland by far more than the differences between NY City and a small town in Arkansas (for example). Though, with the massive influx of Mexicans, there's probably parts of California and Texas that are equally different.

Balkanization here we come.

Re: The One (Percent)

"He doesn't own Air Force 1.." Well, the chairmen of Exxon, Chase, Goldman Sachs etc. don't personally own their jets either. They are provided by their employers, just like Obama's.

Re: The One (Percent)

@Jace

1. Nowhere on that sign does it state he "owns" Air Force One, he only has it at his beck and call. Eat the rich corporate jet users/owners, but fly me to the moon baby. Nice straw man.

2. Maybe guarantee is a strong word; how about he has a better chance at serving on a corporate board than 99% of the country?

3. Spending his early years in Jakarta influenced him such that he (according to his own accounts) imitated the President of Indonesia growing up; this seems to prove his overseas time had a major impact on his childhood and subsequent thought processes.

The only critical failure I see here is your weak attempt to defend a total failure of a one-term President.

Re: The One (Percent)

It is a fundamental cognitive disconnect that every liberal has to posses about their beloved politicians..... they are all for the working class even though they themselves have quite never worked at all... unless you consider being a community organizer"work".

Most Wall Street bankers and investment managers are dyed in the wool liberals - after all they live in one of the most liberal cities in the country and have to work in a State that regularly sends two Democrats to the Senate, more Democrats to the House...

No one has heard Chuck Schumer condemn TARP - how ever we all know how he is opposed to the current "jobs bill" of Obama... and not even a single liberal that i know of, even ponders over this.

From the days of FDR, the Democrat party has had a lot of wealthy donors who run the party - George Soros today is not an aberration but a continuation rather. It is indeed the biggest joke that somehow the Democrat party has passed itself of as the party of the "working class" when it is funded most certainly by the wealthiest of the wealthy.

Re: The One (Percent)

Honolulu - yeah. He spent his formative years in a state which at that point had only been a "state" for less than 15 years, living with people who HATED the idea of the United States.

He may have been BORN in this country, but he really and truly has no concept of the history of America.....

"We are the 53%" is a great site to counter the "We are the 99%" ...

"We are the 1%" would be another great counter.

Re: The One (Percent)

The One didn't get his donations from "Wall Street".
He got it from high level employees of Wall Street.
(and the One did have a job with an investment firm when he first got out of Harvard Law, one he quit before he got fired)
My version is that Wall Street didn't get bailed out, they had to pay the money back plus interest.
Certain firms got TARP and other money to save the particular employees working at those specific firms (remember AIG and the $130M in employee bonuses from bailout funds and much more afterwards for "saving" the company using the taxpayer money?).
The Federal government didn't bail out the companies so much as they shoveled bonuses and spiffs to the individual Democratic Donors who were stakeholders at those companies.

Any chance of a caption contest to have our verbage appear in the text block of your photo?

Re: The One (Percent)

Not only doess he have one of the biggest airplanes ready to go on a whim, but there are two of them that go each time he gets on either one. Not to mention the supporting Air Force fighter jet escort and the Marine helicopters that ferry him to and fro every time AND the cargo planes that ferry the automobiles like the 'beast' and all the armored SUVs required for his enormous entourage. When he goes there are a large number of big aircraft that go along. A huge expense. That is how it goes for ruling elitist presidents. They don't try getting away from the adulation much anymore.

Re: The One (Percent)

The point of the protests is that Obama isn't representing the interests of the 99% Try finding someone who doesn't think using taxpayer money to pay bonuses to people who ruined their businesses is a good idea.

Re: The One (Percent)

Nice reading comprehension skills, Jace. But you're probably right. After his single term, Obama will go back to his $47,000/year job as a middle manager at a small company in Ohio, and Michelle will take a part-time job at Macy's to help pay for the girls' college bills. They'll never have enough money to retire, but then again, who will?

By the way, writing in CAPS and MUUUUUUUTIPLE letters makes you sound like you're twelve.

By AK on   10/15/2011 12:15 PM

Re: The One (Percent)

"He doesn't own Air Force 1...." but it exists to take him wherever he wants to go, whenever.

"nor does him being the president guarantee him a job at any corporation..." Even Al Gore sits on multiple boards. But you're right: it wouldn't be an actual job where he has to work, just go to meetings once a month or so.

"CRITICAL FAILURE" Oh? Let's contrast Obama with Herman Cain: master's degree in Computer Science, worked in Naval ballistics, turned around multiple companies that were failing, saving thousands of jobs for regular working stiffs, by understanding what regular working stiffs do and how business works.

Re: The One (Percent)

True, certainly a one-percenter, but OWS is not— or should not be— against the top percent on an individual basis. There are many decent one-percenters that acknowledge that the overconsolidation of financial power is a disastrous situation. I hope this can be depoliticized a bit more; in the sense of transcending the political spectrum. Do we not ALL agree that Wall Street should have no place in campaigns, that Citizens United is a scandal, or that Glass-Steagall should be reinstated?
Most every politician who is elected has received Wall Street cash; because as it stands, it is requisite for election. No one owns the idea of "anti-corruption" or "anti-cronyism," as an agenda, so why can't we all go forward with this?

Re: The One (Percent)

if this is posted for the current president, then I think it should be posted for both all the recent presidents. While Clinton grew up poor, Obama grew up fatherless like him. Both Bushes grew up and remain in the elite of millionaires. Reagan was rich when he assumed office. Carter's family were peanut moguls. How is it reasonable to single out this one president? Is it because of his race?

By b on   10/16/2011 11:45 AM

Re: The One (Percent)

I think it is BS that he with the most money wins. That is the problem. It should be the person that can do the best job so in that case Obama is out by a landslide. He wants all but gives nothing but grief. We need people that is going to work for the people not against.

Re: The One (Percent)

Has Obama ever indicated that he isn't part of the 1%? All of our three branches of Government are full of the 1%. Some of those fight for the other 99, though I don't think they try very hard at times. Do these people think that a GOP candidate will be better? Bush? Our drug addict politician's son who helped run our country to the ground? It seems to me that growing up in Arkansas, Texas, NH, etc.. doesn't make people any more likely to support or understand middle class then this poster indicates Obama does. I think Obama has made mistakes and has been a disappointment. I hope that his leadership skills will improve. The fight of the 99% is about Obama's failure (and that of every politician in DC) but it is mostly about too much special interest money in DC and the lack of concern for the rest of the American population. The poster is meaningless.

Everyone will be sorry when Obama returns at the end of the world in his jet, MESSIAH ONE to gather all of his followers on Wall Street, Skid Row, Union Halls, and graduates of public schools.

By Jim Sherman on   10/17/2011 11:32 AM

Re: The One (Percent)

Obama doesn't even need to be on a board after his term, he will already get a pretty hefty pension for life at taxpayer expense. If he chooses to be on a board for a major corporation, that only shows his greed and well, he wouldn't be unlike any of the other presidents in recent history. I agree that politics should never be a gateway to wealth, it should be a gateway to a better America!
